Still on Windows 10? 5 Reasons Why Your Business Must Upgrade Now

On October 14, 2025, Windows 10 will officially reach its end of support. After this date, Microsoft will stop providing all types of updates and IT assistance for devices running the operating system (OS).

While Windows 10 still powers roughly 40% of PCs worldwide, it’s not ideal for your business to use the OS once it loses support. In this article, we will highlight five reasons why upgrading to Windows 11 should be a priority. We will also discuss how a reliable managed IT services provider (MSP) like Techmedics can assist you in this process.

5 Reasons to Upgrade from Windows 10 Past the Support Date

1. Security Risks Leave You Vulnerable

As soon as Windows 10’s end of support date lapses, the OS will no longer receive monthly security patches, bug fixes, and general improvements that keep your devices safe and stable. While your PCs will still work, they immediately become prime targets for malware, credential theft, and exploit-based attacks.

For example, an attacker can take advantage of vulnerabilities that remain unpatched on Windows 10 and deploy ransomware through remote code execution or malicious email attachments or links. The malware can then infect critical files and even render the entire system inaccessible. Worse yet, the ransomware may spread to other vulnerable machines if the infected device is on a network.

And even if your outdated device has an antivirus program, cybercriminals can bypass or disable these entirely by exploiting software flaws.

2. You Risk Compliance and Insurance Problems

Using Windows 10 beyond its support date can also result in non-compliance with regulations like HIPAA, PCI DSS, GDPR, and ISO 27001. This is because unsupported software may introduce unpatched security vulnerabilities that violate necessary security controls.

If your company faces a data breach under these laws, regulators may cite your company for negligence and impose fines or penalties. You may even lose certification as a result.

Cybersecurity insurance providers may also deny claims if an attack stemmed from an unsupported system like Windows 10, especially if your policy contains exclusions for failure to maintain industry-standard cybersecurity practices. This leaves you to shoulder the financial damages and fines on your own, which can be costly enough to shut your business down for good.

3. ESU Is a Short-Term, Costly Solution

Despite Windows 10’s impending obsolescence, Microsoft is offering businesses a lifeline through the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program. Through ESU, businesses can continue receiving critical security updates after Windows 10 support ends.

However, this will cost you $61 per device for the first year. This price doubles annually for up to three years, totaling about $427. So if your SMB has 50 Windows 10 PCs, ESU will cost you a total of $21,350 just to delay migration to a more modern OS. ESU also doesn’t provide other fixes, product enhancements, or technical support, which means you’re paying a fortune for a temporary solution.

In contrast, Windows 11 is a free upgrade for many Windows 10 devices released after 2020. While some PCs may need hardware refreshes to become compatible with the newer OS, you avoid the increasing costs of ESU and keep your business secure for longer.

4. Compatibility Issues Can Slow You Down

When operating systems become obsolete, software vendors eventually discontinue support for that OS as well. By staying on Windows 10, your devices may eventually become incompatible with newer software versions, resulting in performance issues, productivity loss, and increased risk of security threats.

Some hardware manufacturers may also choose to drop support for Windows 10 as it reaches its end of support. This means if you buy a new device, you might not receive full driver support, performance optimization, and bug fixes, which can result in system issues and frequent IT support calls.

5. You Miss Out on New Technologies

Finally, continuing to use Windows 10 also prevents your business from leveraging newer technologies that can improve efficiency. For instance, some modern PCs now come with local AI, which enables the following capabilities:

  • Local Data Processing: Businesses can analyze sensitive data locally rather than in the cloud, ensuring better security and compliance.
  • Real-Time Translation: Instantly translate audio to your preferred language during conference calls, ensuring accessibility and eliminating language barriers.
  • Enhanced Biometric Security: Facial recognition, iris scans, and fingerprint matching are done in real time, eliminating the need to send data to the cloud.
  • On-Device Threat Detection: AI can consistently scan for threats in the background without consuming significant battery or compute power.

Upgrading to Windows 11 also lets your business leverage various features that Windows 10 lacks, such as:

  • Mandatory TPM 2.0: TPM 2.0 is a security chip that helps verify your system’s integrity before it boots up, making your devices more resistant to malware and firmware attacks.
  • Smart App Control: This is a security feature that determines if an application is safe to run and blocks potentially dangerous applications from running.
  • Seamless Redocking: Windows 11 remembers and restores all windows to their previous positions when a device is disconnected and reattached to an external monitor. This reduces the setup time of hybrid workers who frequently switch between a laptop and a desktop setup.
  • Snap Layouts and Snap Groups: Snap Layouts arranges windows into preset layouts (e.g., three windows side-by-side, four windows in each quadrant). These windows are then combined into a Snap group, improving multitasking on single or multiple monitors.
